In a highly anticipated event, Apple has announced the launch of upgraded MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models featuring the new M5 chip. The tech giant revealed the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips that will power the latest generation of MacBook Pro laptops, offering enhanced performance and capabilities.
The new MacBook Air will be equipped with the base M5 chip, while the MacBook Pro models will feature the more powerful M5 Pro and M5 Max variants. These new laptops are set to be available for pre-order starting March 4th, with in-store availability beginning on March 11th.
The M5 Pro and M5 Max chips boast an advanced GPU with Neural Accelerators and higher unified memory bandwidth, providing a significant increase in AI compute capabilities. The Fusion Architecture of these chips combines two dies into a single system on a chip (SoC), offering improved performance for professional workloads.
The M5 Pro and M5 Max chips feature an 18-core CPU, with six “super cores” that are touted as the world’s fastest CPU cores, along with 12 performance cores optimized for power-efficient, multithreaded tasks. Additionally, the GPUs in these chips have up to 40 cores, each equipped with a Neural Accelerator, delivering over 4 times the peak GPU compute for AI compared to the previous generation.
Apple’s latest announcement also included the introduction of the Studio Display XDR, a high-end monitor aimed at content creators. This 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display features a mini-LED display with 2,000-plus dimming zones, up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness, and a wider color gamut for improved accuracy. The Studio Display XDR also offers a 120Hz refresh rate, a tilt- and height-adjustable stand, and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity.
While these new products showcase Apple’s commitment to innovation and performance, the company has also raised prices on its MacBook Pro lineup. The 14-inch M5 model now starts at $1,699, while the 16-inch model begins at $2,699. Despite the price increase, customers can expect enhanced features and capabilities with the latest M5 chip-powered devices.
As Apple continues to push the boundaries of technology with its M5 chip and new product offerings, the tech community eagerly awaits the real-world performance and user experience of these cutting-edge devices.
