Trump Declares Oval Office and Cabinet Room National Monuments to Preserve Design

President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation designating the Oval Office and the Cabinet Room within the White House as national monuments. This executive action, described by the President as his first move following the recent midterm elections, aims to legally prevent future administrations from altering the current design of these spaces without congressional approval. According to reports from The Hill, Politico, and The Guardian, the proclamation stipulates that "no major modifications" can be made to the rooms unless Congress ratifies the change. Trump stated that the designation is intended to ensure the specific designs he implemented are not "ripped down by stupid people," effectively freezing the current aesthetic of the Oval Office and Cabinet Room. The move has drawn attention as a significant post-election executive action. While the President noted that Congress would have to ratify the proclamation to allow for future changes, the immediate effect is the legal preservation of the existing gold-covered decor and layout. This decision comes amid a political landscape where the President's party suffered historic defeats in the midterm elections, leading to a focus on preserving his legacy within the White House. The proclamation specifically targets the preservation of the rooms' current state, ensuring that the design elements Trump introduced remain intact regardless of future leadership. By classifying these areas as national monuments, the administration seeks to bypass potential future executive orders or renovation projects that might alter the spaces. ### References * The Hill.
