Democrat Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan Senate Race, Becoming First Muslim Senator

In a significant development for the 2026 midterms, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican Mike Rogers in the race for Michigan's open Senate seat. The victory marks a breakthrough for the progressive left wing of the Democratic Party in one of the nation's most critical swing states. El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants, is set to become the first Muslim senator in United States history. The race was described as bitter, with El-Sayed emerging as the progressive favorite to secure the win. Reports indicate that the victory occurred despite internal resistance from within the Democratic Party, which reportedly revolted against the candidate's selection. France 24's Jessica Le Masurier reported on the atmosphere at a Democratic watch party in Detroit, highlighting the significance of the result for the party's future direction. El-Sayed's victory over Rogers represents a major shift in the political landscape of Michigan, signaling a potential pickup for the Democratic Party in a state previously held by Republicans. As the first Muslim senator, El-Sayed's election is expected to bring diverse perspectives to the Senate, though the specific policy implications of this historic win remain to be fully detailed in current reporting. The outcome underscores the ongoing volatility of the midterms, with New Hampshire and Georgia remaining in Democratic hands while Republicans look to Michigan for a crucial gain. The defeat of Mike Rogers by El-Sayed suggests a realignment of voter preferences that could influence future elections in the region. #NexSouk #AIForGood #EthicalAI #USPolitics #MichiganMidterms **References** * France 24.
