The Ukrainian capital of Kyiv is in mourning as the death toll from a Russian missile attack on an apartment building has risen to 24, including three teenagers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky led the mourning for one of the deadliest attacks on the capital in the ongoing conflict. The attack occurred during what the Ukrainian air force described as Russia's largest barrage on the country since the full-scale invasion began.
Emergency workers spent more than a day digging through the rubble searching for victims, with crowds of grieving people, including many children, gathering at a makeshift memorial near the destroyed building. Teenagers arrived with bouquets and tears, paying their respects to the victims with flowers, stuffed toys, and photographs of the deceased.
The assault on Kyiv is part of a larger series of attacks by Russia, with over 1,560 drones launched against Ukrainian population centers since Wednesday. Ukrainian officials reported that about 180 sites across the country were damaged, including more than 50 residential buildings. The recent attacks have contradicted previous suggestions from leaders like US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin that the war was nearing an end.
In response to the attack, Ukrainian President Zelensky vowed that Ukraine would not allow any strikes that take the lives of its people to go unpunished. He also revealed that Russia is considering a plan to attack a NATO country from Belarus, which borders Ukraine to the south and NATO members Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia to the north and west.
Despite the tragic events, a glimmer of hope emerged as Russia and Ukraine exchanged 205 prisoners of war, marking the first phase of a planned swap of 1,000 PoWs from each side. The exchange was facilitated with the help of the United Arab Emirates.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with devastating consequences for civilians caught in the crossfire. The international community remains on edge as the situation unfolds, with concerns about the potential for further violence and instability in the region.
