Apple has significantly revitalized the iPad Mini line with the release of the 2026 model, codenamed the A20 Pro, marking a strategic shift toward a premium, high-performance device that bridges the gap between the standard iPad and the iPad Pro. The new tablet replaces the traditional LCD display with an OLED screen, a technology previously exclusive to the iPad Pro line, offering deep blacks, rich colors, and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits compared to the previous model's 500 nits.
The hardware redesign includes a 16% reduction in thickness and a 13.8% weight reduction for the Wi-Fi model. By shrinking the display borders by 25%, Apple managed to increase the screen size from 8.3 inches to 8.5 inches while maintaining a form factor that is approximately 45% lighter than the 11-inch iPad Air and 59% lighter than the 13-inch Air. The device features an audio system called Acoustic Display, which moves speakers behind the screen to deliver crisper output, and achieves an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance, allowing it to withstand immersion in three feet of water for 30 minutes.
Under the hood, the iPad Mini now powers the new A20 Pro chip, which debuted in September with the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple benchmarks this processor as delivering up to 60% faster CPU performance and up to 270% faster GPU performance compared to the previous generation's A17 Pro chip. This upgrade is intended to extend the device's useful life, particularly for users who rely on iPads for years. The tablet runs iPadOS 27, which introduces a Mac-esque multitasking interface with floating windows, though users can opt for "Full Screen Apps" to revert to a single-app experience.
However, the device comes with a substantial price increase. The entry-level Wi-Fi version with 128 GB of storage starts at $699, representing a 40% increase from the previous model's price of $599. This pricing strategy places the Mini just $50 less than the cheapest iPad Air, effectively removing its status as an impulse buy for many consumers. Despite the cost, the device retains Touch ID built into the power button rather than upgrading to Face ID, a decision that some experts note requires more user thought than facial recognition.
The front-facing camera has also been relocated to the landscape edge to align with the layout of larger iPads and the iPhone Duo, centering the camera above the screen for video calls. While this benefits users of larger tablets in keyboard cases, it may not be an improvement for those who primarily use the Mini in portrait mode.
