The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Francisco, California, has issued a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory for the Bayshore locations along San Francisco and Monterey Bay. The advisory is in effect from December 1 at 6:47 PM PST until December 3 at 10:00 PM PST.
According to the NWS, a long period westerly swell is expected to bring breaking waves between 10 to 14 feet, with long lulls of 10 to 20 minutes or more between the largest sets. This swell increases the risk for sneaker waves and strong rip currents along the coast. Sneaker waves can unexpectedly run significantly farther up the beach than normal, including over rocks and jetties, posing a danger to beachgoers. Rip currents are also expected to be more frequent and stronger in specific areas.
In addition to the Beach Hazards Statement, the Coastal Flood Advisory warns of up to 1.4 feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This could lead to flooding of lots, parks, and roads, with isolated road closures expected.
The high tide timing at the San Francisco tidal gauge is projected to be above normal levels on several days, with the highest peak of 1.4 feet above normal occurring on Thursday. Residents and visitors in the affected areas are advised to exercise caution and stay informed about changing weather conditions.
The NWS urges individuals to avoid venturing too close to the water’s edge during this period and to be mindful of the potential hazards associated with the elevated surf and coastal flooding. It is essential to heed all warnings and advisories issued by local authorities to ensure personal safety and well-being.
As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, events like these serve as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of extreme weather conditions. Understanding and following weather alerts can help mitigate risks and protect lives in vulnerable coastal regions.
