As winter settles in, the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions are bracing for their first widespread winter event of the season. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple Winter Weather Advisories for various areas, warning of mixed precipitation that could lead to hazardous road conditions and impact commutes.
In the Mid-Atlantic, areas of central, northern, northwest, and western Virginia, as well as eastern West Virginia, are expected to experience a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Locations along the Mason-Dixon Line may see all snow, while areas further south could transition to rain as temperatures rise. The NWS advises residents to remain weather aware as updates to the forecast are likely.
In Maryland and panhandle West Virginia, total snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible near the Mason-Dixon Line and higher elevations. Ice accumulations could reach up to one-tenth of an inch, creating slippery road conditions that could impact the Tuesday morning commute.
Further west, portions of central and east central Missouri are forecasted to receive between 1 and 3 inches of snow, while south central and southwest Illinois, along with east central Missouri, could see total snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches. The hazardous conditions are expected to impact Monday evening commutes in these areas.
In Virginia, Fluvanna and Western Louisa Counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory for mixed precipitation, with the majority expected to be light freezing rain or sleet. Total snow and sleet accumulations are forecasted to be less than half an inch, with ice accumulations of a light glaze. Slippery road conditions could affect the Tuesday morning commute.
In Oklahoma, portions of east central and northeast regions are experiencing a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow, with ice accumulations around a light glaze. The hazardous conditions are impacting the Monday morning commute, with roads, bridges, and overpasses likely to become slick and hazardous.
As winter weather sweeps across these regions, residents are urged to exercise caution, monitor local forecasts, and adjust travel plans accordingly to ensure their safety and well-being.
