As winter settles in across the United States, several states are bracing for heavy snowfall, prompting the issuance of Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories by the National Weather Service (NWS). From Michigan to Maine, and Kentucky to Kansas, significant snow accumulations are expected, impacting travel and daily commutes.
In Emmet County, Michigan, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from December 1 at 4 PM to December 2 at 8 AM EST. Heavy lake-effect snow is anticipated, with total accumulations between 4 and 8 inches, and locally higher amounts exceeding a foot in northern parts of the county. Similarly, in Caribou, Maine, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued from December 1 at 2:58 AM EST until December 3 at 7 AM EST. Heavy snowfall of 5 to 10 inches is possible, with the potential for patchy blowing snow due to gusty north winds. Travel conditions are expected to be difficult, impacting Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.
In Kentucky and Missouri, Winter Weather Advisories are in place, with mixed precipitation and snow expected to create slick and hazardous road conditions. Total snow accumulations of up to two inches are forecasted in southwest Indiana and adjacent portions of southern Illinois, impacting the Tuesday morning commute.
Further west, in Kansas, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 6 PM CST, with total snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches expected. Slippery road conditions are anticipated, especially during the morning hours, affecting the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes.
In Montana, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued from December 1 at 1:18 AM MST until December 2 at 5 PM MST.
