As winter settles in across the United States, several regions are bracing for significant winter storms that are expected to bring heavy snowfall and high winds. The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories for various counties in states like Kansas, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, New York, and Indiana.
In Kansas, a Wind Advisory has been issued for several counties, including Chase, Marion, McPherson, Saline, Harvey, Sedgwick, and Sumner. Northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected on Saturday, potentially leading to blowing around of unsecured objects, downed tree limbs, and a few power outages.
In Wisconsin, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Clark County, with heavy snow expected to bring total accumulations between 4 and 6 inches. The storm is part of a larger system moving west to east across the Midwest, with areas along and south of Interstate 90 expected to receive at least 6 inches of snowfall.
Meanwhile, in Iowa and Illinois, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for portions of north central and northwest Illinois and east central, northeast, and southeast Iowa. Total snow accumulations between 10 and 14 inches are expected, with winds gusting as high as 35 mph. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and hazardous, making travel difficult to impossible.
In the Northeast, a Special Weather Statement has been issued for parts of New York, warning of a lake effect snow band accompanied by winds of up to 30 mph that can rapidly reduce visibility to less than one mile. The statement urges caution for travelers and advises preparedness for snow or ice-covered roads.
Additionally, in California, an Air Quality Alert has been issued for the South Coast Air Basin, including Orange County and non-desert portions of Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. A mandatory wood-burning ban has been put in place to protect public health from high levels of fine particle pollution.
As these winter storms sweep across the country, it is crucial for residents to stay informed, heed warnings from local authorities, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Travel may be significantly impacted, and individuals are advised to avoid unnecessary trips during inclement weather conditions.
