As the holiday season kicks off, parts of the northeastern United States are facing significant weather challenges. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple Lake Effect Snow Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories for various counties in Ohio and New York, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected to create hazardous conditions for travelers.
In Wayne and Northern Cayuga Counties in New York, residents can expect heavy lake effect snow with total accumulations of 12 to 22 inches in the most persistent snow bands. The NWS Buffalo NY warns of blowing and drifting snow, making travel very difficult and impacting morning and evening commutes as well as Thanksgiving holiday travel.
Similarly, in Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula Inland Counties in Ohio, heavy lake effect snow is occurring, with additional snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches and locally higher amounts possible. Whiteout conditions within snow bands are expected, leading to treacherous travel conditions and potentially life-threatening situations. The NWS Cleveland OH advises travelers to exercise caution and expect reduced visibility.
Additional Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for Lorain County, Summit County, and Northern Erie County in Ohio, where residents can anticipate up to two to five inches of snowfall, along with gusty winds that may reach up to 40 mph. These conditions will make travel difficult due to snow-covered roads and reduced visibility, particularly in lake effect snow areas.
Furthermore, a High Wind Watch has been issued for the Guadalupe Mountains of West Texas and Southeast New Mexico, with northeast winds of 35 to 45 mph and gusts up to 65 mph expected. Travelers, especially those in high-profile vehicles, are advised to exercise caution as these strong winds can make driving challenging.
