The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch and Lake Effect Snow Warnings for parts of New York State, specifically Southern Herkimer County, Hamilton, and Northern Herkimer Counties. The alerts are in effect from Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning, with heavy snow accumulations and gusty winds expected.
In Southern Herkimer County, total snow accumulations of 7 or more inches are possible in the most persistent lake effect bands, with winds gusting as high as 40 mph. The hazardous conditions may lead to visibilities dropping below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow, making travel difficult and impacting commutes on Thursday evening and Friday morning.
In Hamilton and Northern Herkimer Counties, heavy lake effect snow is expected with total accumulations of 6 to 12 inches in the most persistent bands and winds gusting as high as 35 mph. The snow band is forecasted to set up across areas north of Route 28 before moving southward, affecting travel conditions.
Additionally, a Special Weather Statement has been issued for parts of the Charleston Tri-County area in South Carolina, warning of locally dense fog impacting visibility along and north of I-26. Motorists are advised to be cautious as visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile, creating hazardous driving conditions.
In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories have been issued due to northwest winds gusting to 30 to 40 mph, potentially causing slippery roads from earlier light rain and snow freezing. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects and lead to power outages in some areas.
Furthermore, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for various regions in California, including the Marin Hills and North Bay areas, where visibility may drop to one quarter mile or less due to dense fog. Hazardous driving conditions are expected until Wednesday morning.
These weather alerts highlight the importance of staying informed and prepared for changing conditions, especially during the winter months. It is crucial for individuals to exercise caution while traveling and to follow any guidance provided by local authorities and meteorological services.
