As the winter season approaches, dense fog advisories have been issued across various states in the United States, including Utah, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Florida. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of visibility dropping to less than a quarter mile in some areas, making driving conditions hazardous.
In Utah, the NWS Salt Lake City UT issued a Dense Fog Advisory for the Northern Wasatch Front until 9 AM MST, with near-zero visibility reported in certain areas. The fog is expected to spread eastward towards major highways, potentially affecting morning commuters.
Similarly, in Kentucky, the NWS Jackson KY issued a Flood Advisory due to excessive rainfall causing minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. The affected counties include Bath, Elliott, Menifee, Montgomery, Powell, Rowan, and Morgan. The advisory is in effect until 5:15 AM EST.
In Tennessee, the NWS Memphis TN issued two Dense Fog Advisories, one for portions of East Arkansas, North Mississippi, Southeast Missouri, and West Tennessee until 8 AM CST, and another for the same areas until 9 AM CST. The advisories warn of reduced visibility, making driving conditions hazardous.
Additionally, a Special Weather Statement was issued by the NWS Huntsville AL for a strong thunderstorm moving east at 45 mph, with wind gusts up to 45 mph expected. Locations impacted include Huntsville, Madison, Athens, and University Of Alabama In Huntsville.
In Florida, the NWS Melbourne FL issued a Dense Fog Advisory for Brevard, Orange, Osceola, and Indian River counties until 9 AM EST, with visibility as low as one quarter mile or less.
The widespread dense fog advisories highlight the importance of exercising caution while driving in these conditions. Reduced visibility can lead to accidents and delays, emphasizing the need for drivers to slow down, use headlights, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, events like dense fog advisories may become more frequent or severe. It is crucial for individuals and communities to stay informed about weather alerts and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
