The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has issued a High Surf Advisory and a Rip Current Statement for various coastal areas in the region. Large breaking waves measuring between 9 to 12 feet are expected, posing a risk of life-threatening rip currents. The advisory and statement are in effect until 6:00 PM AST on November 13, 2021.
The most vulnerable areas for high surf and beach erosion include Pinones along Road 187, Parcelas Suarez, Villas del Mar, and Villa Christiana in Loiza; Fortuna in Luquillo; Pueblo and Tamarindo in Aguadilla; Barrio Obrero, Pueblo, and Jareaito in Arecibo; Las Boca in Barceloneta; Machuca in Manati; Puerto Nuevo in Vega Baja; Ocean Park in San Juan; and Barrio Espinal in Aguada. Additionally, north-to-northwestern exposed beaches of northwestern and northern Puerto Rico are at a high risk of rip currents.
The impacts of these weather conditions include high waves that can wash over jetties, sweep people and pets onto jagged rocks, and cause rough surf that may knock individuals down. Large breaking waves are likely to result in localized beach and dune structure erosion, creating dangerous swimming conditions. Rip currents, on the other hand, can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper waters, making it challenging to return to safety.
It is crucial for residents and visitors in the affected areas to exercise caution and adhere to any safety warnings or instructions provided by local authorities. Avoiding entering the water during these hazardous conditions is strongly advised to prevent accidents and injuries.
The convergence of the High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Risk underscores the importance of being vigilant and prepared for extreme weather events. Climate change and rising sea levels can exacerbate the impact of such weather phenomena, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to mitigate risks and protect vulnerable coastal communities.
As we navigate these weather challenges, it is essential to stay informed, stay safe, and support one another in times of crisis. By prioritizing safety and resilience, we can collectively weather the storm and emerge stronger together.
