The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a High Surf Advisory and Coastal Flood Advisory for the island of Yap, as Tropical Storm Fung-wong continues to move northwest of the region. Hazardous surf conditions of 10 to 14 feet are expected along the south, west, and north facing reefs, with minor coastal flooding of 1 to 2 feet anticipated. The advisories are in effect until 5 PM ChST Monday, with potential impacts including flooding in low-lying coastal areas, dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, and localized beach erosion.
As TS Fung-wong progresses, surf heights are forecasted to peak at 13 to 14 feet before gradually subsiding over the weekend. However, if the storm intensifies faster than expected, surf levels could reach dangerous heights of 15 feet. The combination of increased surf and King Tide high tide cycles may lead to minor coastal inundation and heightened erosion along the coastline.
In a separate weather event, the NWS has also issued a Coastal Flood Statement for the north and west facing reefs of Yap, with hazardous surf conditions of 9 to 13 feet and isolated minor coastal flooding expected. Similar impacts of flooding, dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, and localized beach erosion are anticipated until 5 AM ChST Monday.
Meanwhile, in the United States, the NWS has issued High Surf and Coastal Flood Advisories for the Clatsop and Tillamook Coast, South Washington Coast, and Central Coast of Oregon. Large waves and hazardous surf conditions with breakers up to 25-30 feet are forecasted, posing risks of destructive waves washing over beaches, jetties, and structures unexpectedly. Sneaker waves are also possible due to high waves and long period energetic periods, urging caution for those near the water.
Additionally, a High Wind Warning has been issued for the Western Aleutians in Alaska, with southwest winds expected to reach 45 to 65 mph, gusting up to 95 mph. The strong low-pressure system moving into the Western Bering Sea is likely to cause loose debris movement, property damage, power outages, and challenging travel conditions.
As extreme weather events continue to impact various regions globally, it is crucial for residents to stay informed, follow safety guidelines, and take necessary precautions to ensure their well-being and minimize potential risks.
