As coastal communities brace for potential flooding, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of warnings and advisories for various counties along the East Coast. The warnings come as a result of an impending weather system that is expected to bring significant inundation to low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
In Westmoreland, Richmond, Northumberland, Lancaster, Middlesex, Mathews, Western Essex, and Eastern Essex Counties, a Coastal Flood Warning is in effect until 1 AM EDT Friday. This warning predicts one to two feet of inundation above ground level, posing a threat of property damage to homes and businesses near the waterfront and shoreline. The flooding may result in road closures and potential harm to structures.
Similarly, Dorchester, Wicomico, and Somerset Counties are under a Coastal Flood Warning until 4 AM EDT Friday, with two to three feet of inundation expected in low-lying areas. The impact is likely to be similar to the aforementioned counties, with the potential for road closures and property damage.
In Ocean and Coastal Ocean, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in place until 8 AM EDT Friday, predicting up to one foot of inundation above ground level. This advisory focuses on the back bays of Barnegat Bay, where flooding may affect vulnerable roads in coastal and bayside communities.
Kent MD is under a Coastal Flood Advisory until 5 AM EDT Friday, with up to one half foot of inundation expected. This advisory highlights the vulnerability of bayside communities and tidal waterways to flooding, potentially leading to partial or full road closures.
Queen Annes, Talbot, and Caroline Counties are also under a Coastal Flood Advisory until 3 AM EDT Friday, with similar impacts as Kent MD.
In addition to the coastal flood warnings and advisories, a Frost Advisory has been issued for several counties in Alabama, where temperatures are expected to range from 34 to 38 degrees, potentially harming sensitive outdoor vegetation.
Furthermore, a Wind Advisory is in effect for eastern and southeastern Massachusetts, as well as all of Rhode Island, until 5 AM EDT Saturday. West winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected, posing a risk of blowing around unsecured objects and causing power outages.
As communities prepare for the impending weather conditions, it is crucial to heed the warnings issued by the NWS and take necessary precautions to ensure safety and minimize potential damage.
