As coastal areas along the Eastern United States brace for potential flooding, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of warnings and advisories to alert residents of the impending risks. From Virginia to New York, regions are expected to experience inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
In Accomack and Northampton Counties in Virginia, a Coastal Flood Warning is in effect until midnight tonight, with water levels expected to rise one to two feet above ground level. The flooding poses a significant threat to vulnerable areas, potentially resulting in property damage to homes and businesses near the waterfront and shoreline. Roads may be closed, and homes and businesses could be at risk.
Similarly, in New Kent, Gloucester, James City, and other counties in Virginia, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in place until 10 PM tonight. Up to one foot of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, potentially causing shallow flooding in vulnerable locations. Minor property damage is possible, with some roads and low-lying property likely to experience flooding.
Further north in New York, Flood Advisories have been issued for southern Connecticut and Suffolk County, with heavy rainfall causing minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Doppler radar indicates that between 0.5 and 2 inches of rain have already fallen, with additional rainfall expected to exacerbate the flooding. Locations such as Bridgeport, New Haven, and Riverhead are among those at risk of experiencing flooding.
In Alaska, a Hydrologic Outlook has been released by the NWS Anchorage, warning residents along the Kenai River downstream of Skilak Lake of rising water levels. The Skilak glacier dammed lake (GDL) is believed to be releasing water, potentially causing the river to reach action stage and crest above flood stage in the coming days. The previous release of the lake occurred in September 2023, with current levels comparable to those observed before the 2023 release.
As high winds of up to 65 mph are expected in Point Hope and the Lisburne Peninsula in Alaska, residents are advised to prepare for potential property damage, power outages, and difficult travel conditions. Snow showers accompanying the high winds may reduce visibility to one-half mile or less at times.
With the NWS closely monitoring these weather events and issuing timely warnings and advisories, residents in the affected areas are urged to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and heed evacuation orders if issued. The safety and well-being of individuals and communities remain a top priority as they navigate through these weather challenges.
