As coastal areas brace for potential flooding, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of Coastal Flood Advisories and Warnings for various counties in Virginia and New York. The alerts, which are in effect until the end of October, highlight the imminent threat of inundation in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
In Virginia, New Kent, Gloucester, Eastern King William, Eastern King and Queen, Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset, Westmoreland, Northumberland, Accomack, and Northampton Counties are all under Coastal Flood Advisories and Warnings. The NWS warns of up to two feet of inundation above ground level in some areas, posing a significant risk of property damage to homes and businesses near the waterfront and shoreline. Additionally, flooding is expected to extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays, leading to road closures and potential vehicle flooding.
In New York, Hudson, Eastern Essex, Eastern Union, New York (Manhattan), Richmond (Staten Island), Kings (Brooklyn), Southern Queens, and Southern Nassau Counties are also under Coastal Flood Advisories and Warnings. The alerts indicate the possibility of one to two feet of inundation above ground level in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline, with minor flooding expected in low-lying properties, including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes with basements near the waterfront. Furthermore, breaking waves along the oceanfront may result in beach erosion flooding during high tides.
The combination of high surf, coastal flooding, and potential property damage underscores the importance of preparedness and caution in these regions. Residents are advised to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions and take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their properties.
As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, coastal areas are increasingly vulnerable to flooding and other extreme events. It is crucial for communities to prioritize resilience measures and adaptation strategies to mitigate the risks posed by such natural disasters.
