As coastal regions in Virginia and Washington State brace for adverse weather conditions, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued several alerts to warn residents and visitors about potential dangers. The alerts include High Surf Advisories and Coastal Flood Advisories and Warnings, highlighting the risks posed by large breaking waves, inundation, and potential property damage.
In Virginia, the NWS Wakefield office issued a High Surf Advisory for Eastern Currituck County, warning of waves reaching 8 to 12 feet in the surf zone until 7 AM EDT Thursday. Additionally, Coastal Flood Advisories are in place for Norfolk/Portsmouth, Hampton/Poquoson Counties, Suffolk, Chesapeake, New Kent, Gloucester, Eastern King William, Eastern King and Queen, and York Counties until 10 AM EDT Thursday. These advisories caution about up to one foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, potentially leading to shallow flooding and property damage.
On the other side of the country, the NWS Seattle office issued a High Surf Advisory for the Northern Washington Coast zone, with large breaking waves of 17 to 20 feet at 15 seconds until 11 PM PDT. The advisory warns of strong surf and sneaker waves that can pose risks to individuals, move debris, and cause beach erosion.
In Kansas, the NWS Dodge City office issued Freeze Warnings and Watches for several counties, including Edwards, Kiowa, Pawnee, Clark, Ford, Meade, Seward, Barber, Comanche, Pratt, and Stafford. Sub-freezing temperatures as low as the mid-20s to 28 degrees could lead to frost and freeze conditions, potentially damaging crops, sensitive vegetation, and outdoor plumbing.
The combination of high surf, coastal flooding, and freezing temperatures underscores the diverse weather challenges facing different regions across the United States. As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, it is essential for residents, businesses, and authorities to stay informed and prepared for such extreme events.
