The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Coastal Flood Advisories and Watches for several areas along the Maryland and Delaware shorelines. The alerts warn of potential tidal flooding and inundation above ground level, impacting low-lying areas. The affected regions include Calvert County and Saint Mary’s County in Maryland, as well as Inland Sussex, Delaware Beaches, Cape May, and Atlantic Coastal Cape May in Delaware and New Jersey.
In Calvert County, Maryland, tide levels are expected to reach around 3.0 feet, leading to water on streets like Charles Street and Williams Street in Solomons, with backyards near 9th Street in North Beach affected. The Coastal Flood Watch extends from late Wednesday night through late Thursday night, with tide levels of up to 4.0 feet possible, causing flooding in various streets and structures in North Beach and Solomons.
Similarly, in Saint Mary’s County, Maryland, water covers roads on Saint George Island at 3.5 feet, with inundation at marinas off Saint Mary’s River, Smith Creek, and Jutland Creek. At 4.0 feet, low spots along Palmer Road are flooded. The Coastal Flood Watch in this area spans from Wednesday evening through Thursday evening, with tide levels rising to two and a half to three feet above normal.
In Delaware and New Jersey, the Coastal Flood Advisory predicts up to one foot of inundation above ground level near shorelines and tidal waterways. This could lead to flooding on vulnerable roads in coastal and bayside communities, potentially causing partial or full road closures.
The NWS urges residents in these areas to stay informed about the changing weather conditions, especially around high tide times. The impacts of coastal flooding can be significant, affecting homes, roads, and structures, and potentially leading to disruptions in daily life.
As climate change continues to influence weather patterns, coastal areas are increasingly vulnerable to flooding and other extreme weather events. It is essential for communities to be prepared and take necessary precautions to mitigate the impacts of such events.
