The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of alerts for Virginia, warning residents of high surf advisories and coastal flood warnings in various counties. The alerts, issued by the NWS Wakefield VA, highlight the potential risks and impacts of large breaking waves and inundation in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
In Accomack and Northampton Counties, a High Surf Advisory is in effect from 7 AM this morning until 6 AM EDT Thursday. Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in place from 11 AM this morning to 7 PM EDT this evening, with up to one foot of inundation expected above ground level in vulnerable areas.
In Virginia Beach, similar conditions are expected with a High Surf Advisory in effect until 1 AM EDT Thursday. Further warnings have been issued for Charles City, Surry, James City, Isle of Wight, and Newport News Counties, where a Coastal Flood Warning is in place from 1 PM this afternoon to 7 PM EDT this evening. The warning forecasts one to two feet of inundation above ground level, posing an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses near the waterfront and shoreline.
Similarly, New Kent, Gloucester, Mathews, Eastern King William, Eastern King and Queen, and York Counties are under a Coastal Flood Advisory from 1 PM this afternoon to 7 PM EDT this evening. Shallow flooding is expected in vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline, with up to one foot of water above ground level in low-lying areas.
