The National Weather Service in Honolulu, Hawaii, has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Friday and Saturday due to dry and windy conditions expected across the region. The watch is in effect for mainly leeward areas of all Hawaiian Islands, including interior sections of Oahu and the Big Island, as well as all of North Big Island. The watch is set to begin Friday morning and last through Saturday afternoon.
The combination of high pressure moving east, north of the islands, and a pocket of drier air moving into the region will create critical fire weather conditions. The local pressure gradient is expected to increase, leading to windy conditions with east winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity is forecasted to drop as low as 40 to 45 percent, particularly during late morning through the afternoon each day.
The NWS warns that under these conditions, any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly, and outdoor burning is not recommended. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution and follow any additional guidance or restrictions issued by local authorities.
This Fire Weather Watch highlights the ongoing challenges posed by weather conditions in the region, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and vigilance in preventing and managing potential fire incidents. As climate change continues to influence weather patterns globally, events like this serve as a reminder of the need for proactive measures to mitigate risks and protect communities and ecosystems.
