As coastal communities across the United States face a barrage of hazardous weather conditions, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple alerts to warn residents of potential dangers. From dangerous rip currents to coastal flooding and high winds, the impact of these weather events can be significant.
In North Carolina, a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for the beaches north of Cape Hatteras, warning of dangerous rip currents that can sweep even the most experienced swimmers away from shore. The NWS Newport/Morehead City NC has advised caution from 8 AM EDT Monday through Monday evening, with the most likely time for strong rip currents to occur around 1:45 PM Monday.
In Maryland and Washington DC, Coastal Flood Advisories have been issued for Southeast Harford County and Anne Arundel County, respectively. These advisories warn of up to one foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas due to tidal flooding, especially around the time of high tide. The impacts include flooding of streets and parking lots, with tides one and a half to two feet above normal.
Further west, in California, a High Surf Advisory has been issued for the northwest and west facing San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County Central Coast Beaches. Large breaking waves of 10 to 14 feet with dangerous rip currents are expected due to a moderate to long period northwest swell. The advisory is in effect from 9 AM Monday to 9 PM PDT Wednesday, with an increased risk for ocean drowning and other water-related hazards.
In North Dakota and Wyoming, Wind Advisories and High Wind Warnings have been issued, with gusts of up to 55 mph and 65 mph expected in certain areas. These strong winds can pose risks to transportation and outdoor objects, with the potential for hazardous conditions for light-weight or high-profile vehicles.
As coastal communities brace for these hazardous weather conditions, it is crucial for residents to stay informed, follow the guidance of local authorities, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. By heeding the warnings and being prepared, individuals can mitigate the risks associated with these weather events.
