Indian-American defence strategist Ashley Tellis has been arrested by US authorities on charges of unlawfully retaining over 1,000 pages of classified national defense information, including documents marked as “SECRET” and “TOP SECRET.” Tellis, who has served on the National Security Council as a special assistant to President George W. Bush, was found to have met with Chinese officials multiple times, raising concerns about potential espionage activities.
According to reports from NDTV, Tellis was captured on video footage printing multiple classified documents, including one marked as top secret. The FBI discovered these documents at his Virginia home, leading to his arrest. Tellis, a prominent figure in US-India relations, has also been involved in negotiating the landmark civil nuclear deal with India.
In a much-discussed 2025 essay titled “India’s Great-Power Delusions” in Foreign Affairs, Tellis expressed views on India, Pakistan, the US, and China. He argued that India’s ambitions exceed its capabilities, citing slow economic growth, limited military capacity, and weak institutions as constraints on India’s aspirations to become a pole in a multipolar world.
Despite the allegations brought against him, Tellis has denied the charges through his lawyers, who have stated their intention to vigorously contest the accusations. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the US think tank where Tellis is affiliated, has sent him on leave pending further investigation into the matter.
The arrest of Ashley Tellis has sparked discussions about national security, espionage, and the delicate balance of power in international relations. The case highlights the importance of safeguarding classified information and the potential risks associated with unauthorized access to sensitive documents.
