As coastal communities in various parts of the United States face impending weather challenges, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued several advisories and warnings to alert residents of potential hazards. From high surf advisories to coastal flood warnings, the regions of concern span from the East Coast to the West Coast, impacting areas such as Maine, Maryland, Arizona, and North Carolina.
In Maine, a High Surf Advisory has been issued for Coastal Hancock and Coastal Washington Counties, with nearshore waves expected to reach between 4 to 7 feet and a high rip current risk. The advisory is in effect from 8 AM Monday to 8 PM EDT Tuesday, warning of dangerous beach conditions, rip currents, and the possibility of minor beach erosion.
In Maryland, Coastal Flood Advisories have been issued for St. Marys County and Calvert County, with up to one half foot of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas due to tidal flooding. The advisories are in effect until Monday and Tuesday, respectively, around the times of high tide, with impacts including water covering roads, yards, and approaching structures, as well as flooding of parking lots and low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, in Arizona, a Flood Warning for south central Arizona, including Maricopa, has been lifted as flood waters have receded, no longer posing a threat. Residents are advised to continue heeding remaining road closures in the area.
On the East Coast, North Carolina is facing multiple weather challenges, with Coastal Flood Warnings, High Surf Advisories, and Beach Hazards Statements issued for areas like East Carteret County and Ocracoke Island. These warnings highlight the risks of inundation above ground level, large breaking waves, dangerous rip currents, and strong longshore currents, posing threats to property, life, and businesses.
As these weather events unfold, it is crucial for residents in the affected areas to stay informed, follow safety guidelines, and take necessary precautions to ensure their well-being and the protection of their property. The coordination between meteorological agencies, local authorities, and communities is essential in mitigating the impacts of severe weather events and safeguarding vulnerable coastal regions.
