The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of severe weather alerts for coastal areas, including High Surf Advisories, Rip Current Statements, and Coastal Flood Advisories. These alerts are in effect until various times, with impacts expected to affect several counties in Georgia and South Carolina.
The High Surf Advisory warns of large breaking waves up to 6 feet in the surf zone, posing risks to swimmers and surfers. Additionally, dangerous rip currents are expected, which can swiftly carry individuals away from shore. The Coastal Flood Advisory predicts up to one foot of inundation above ground level along shorelines and tidal waterways, potentially impacting roads and causing localized beach erosion.
In specific areas like Lake Moultrie, a Lake Wind Advisory has been issued due to strong north winds of 10 to 20 knots with gusts up to 30 knots. These conditions will create hazardous situations for small craft on the lake.
Further inland, a Winter Storm Watch has been declared for central California, with heavy snowfall expected above 6500-7000 feet. Total snow accumulations of 12 to 24 inches are possible, leading to slick and hazardous road conditions that could impact travel.
In Hanford, California, a Wind Advisory is in effect for regions like Indian Wells Valley and the Mojave Desert, with west winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 55 mph expected. These gusty winds may cause objects to be blown around, tree limbs to fall, and potential power outages.
Additionally, a Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Saint Thomas in the Virgin Islands, with thunderstorms producing heavy rain and the possibility of life-threatening flash flooding in urban areas, highways, and underpasses.
These severe weather alerts highlight the importance of staying informed and taking necessary precautions to ensure safety. Residents in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather updates, avoid swimming in dangerous conditions, and secure outdoor objects that could be blown away by strong winds.
