As the fall season progresses, coastal areas in the southeastern United States are facing weather challenges that include dangerous rip currents and potential coastal flooding. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple advisories for various counties in North Carolina, highlighting the risks posed by these weather phenomena.
In Coastal Horry and Coastal Georgetown Counties, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 11 PM EDT, with up to half a foot of inundation expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Vulnerable causeways and low-lying roads may experience minor coastal flooding, urging residents to stay informed about potential impacts and closures. Additionally, a Rip Current Statement has been issued for Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover Counties until 8 PM EDT, warning of dangerous rip currents that can sweep swimmers away from shore into deeper waters.
Further south, the lower Cape Fear River, including downtown Wilmington, is also under a Coastal Flood Advisory from 9 PM to 1 AM EDT Wednesday. Minor coastal flooding is anticipated, with water potentially spreading out of storm drains onto Water Street in downtown Wilmington.
In contrast, areas in the northern United States are experiencing colder temperatures, as evidenced by a Frost Advisory in Northern Lower Michigan and parts of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Temperatures as low as 32 to 33 degrees Fahrenheit could result in frost formation, potentially harming sensitive outdoor vegetation if left uncovered.
Meanwhile, central Kentucky, including Bullitt and Jefferson Counties, is under a Flood Warning due to excessive rainfall causing flooding in rivers, creeks, and streams. Doppler radar indicates heavy rain from thunderstorms, with up to 5 inches of rainfall recorded and additional amounts possible in the warned area.
These weather events underscore the importance of staying informed and prepared for changing conditions, especially in coastal regions prone to flooding and rip currents. Residents are advised to heed official warnings, monitor local weather updates, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and protect property.
