The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has issued a High Surf Warning and a High Rip Current Risk for various coastal areas, effective until early next week. The warning highlights the potential dangers posed by large breaking waves reaching up to 18 feet and life-threatening rip currents.
The affected areas include Pinones, Loiza, Luquillo, Aguadilla, Arecibo, Barceloneta, Manati, Vega Baja, San Juan, and Aguada, among others. The warning emphasizes the risk of moderate to significant beach erosion, flooding in vulnerable areas, and property damage near the waterfront. Additionally, high waves may overtop rocks and jetties, posing a threat to swimmers and bystanders.
The NWS advises against swimming or wading in the affected areas due to the strong surf, which can erode beaches, breach seawalls, and increase the risk of rip currents. Rip currents can swiftly carry even experienced swimmers away from shore into deeper waters, making it challenging to return to safety.
Furthermore, a Rip Current Statement has been issued for the beaches of Cabo Rojo, emphasizing the life-threatening nature of rip currents and the difficulty they pose for swimmers to navigate back to shore. The statement urges caution and vigilance when entering the water.
In addition to the coastal warnings, a Flood Advisory has been issued for Ciales, Morovis, and Orocovis, where heavy rainfall has caused urban and small stream flooding. Residents in these areas are advised to exercise caution and avoid low-lying and poor drainage areas.
As climate change continues to impact weather patterns globally, extreme weather events like high surf, rip currents, and flooding are becoming more frequent and severe. It is crucial for individuals to stay informed about weather alerts and heed the advice of local authorities to ensure their safety and well-being.
