The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of alerts for coastal areas across the United States, warning of dangerous conditions including high surf, rip currents, and coastal flooding. These alerts, verified by the NWS, highlight the potential risks to beachgoers, residents, and property in the affected regions.
In Palm Beach County, Florida, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 2 PM EDT on Sunday, with large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet expected in the surf zone. A High Rip Current Risk is also present, posing a threat to swimmers and surfers through Monday evening. Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in place until 8 PM EDT Monday, with moderate coastal flooding anticipated. The impacts include flooding of lots, parks, and roads, dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, localized beach erosion, and the potential for rip currents to sweep individuals away from shore.
Further south, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Southern Hancock County, Mississippi, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 6 PM CDT Sunday. Minor coastal flooding of 1 to 2 feet above ground level is expected during high tide, with flooding of low-lying areas along the shore possible.
In Grand Junction, Colorado, a Special Weather Statement has been issued due to a strong thunderstorm moving northeast at 40 mph. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are forecasted, with the potential to knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. A Flash Flood Warning is also in place for the Turner Gulch Burn Scar in southwestern Mesa County, warning of life-threatening flash flooding due to heavy rain over the burn scar.
In Charleston, South Carolina, a High Rip Current Risk and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect, with dangerous rip currents and saltwater inundation expected along shorelines and tidal waterways. High tide will occur around 6:45 PM at Fort Pulaski, with saltwater inundation possible 1 to 2 hours before and after high tide.
Lastly, a Coastal Flood Warning has been issued for the St. Johns River Basin in Jacksonville, Florida, until 5 PM EDT Tuesday. Significant coastal flooding is anticipated, with numerous road closures, inundation of low-lying property, and shoreline erosion expected.
These alerts serve as crucial warnings for residents and visitors in the affected areas to exercise caution, stay informed, and follow any evacuation orders or safety recommendations issued by local authorities.
