The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of advisories for coastal areas in Virginia and California, warning residents and visitors of potentially hazardous conditions. In Virginia, a High Surf Advisory and Beach Hazards Statement have been issued for Eastern Currituck County, Dorchester, Wicomico, and Somerset Counties. These advisories are in effect until early Friday morning, with large breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet in the surf zone and dangerous rip currents expected. The NWS warns of dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, as well as the possibility of localized beach erosion.
Additionally, Coastal Flood Advisories have been issued for New Kent, Eastern King William, Eastern King and Queen Counties, Gloucester, Middlesex, Mathews, York Counties, Richmond, Lancaster, Western Essex, and Eastern Essex Counties in Virginia. These advisories are in effect until late Thursday night or early Friday morning, with up to one foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Shallow flooding is expected in vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline, posing a low threat of property damage.
In California, a Wind Advisory has been issued for the Western Antelope Valley, Interstate 5 Corridor, and Western Antelope Valley Foothills. Northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected from Friday evening to early Saturday morning. Gusty winds may cause unsecured objects to be blown around, tree limbs to fall, and a few power outages.
These advisories highlight the importance of staying informed about weather conditions and taking necessary precautions to ensure safety. Residents and visitors in the affected areas should be cautious when engaging in water activities, be mindful of potential flooding, and secure any loose objects outdoors to prevent damage.
As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, it is crucial for individuals and communities to be prepared for extreme weather events. By staying informed and following guidance from weather authorities, we can mitigate risks and protect lives and property.
