As coastal communities brace for potential hazards, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued several weather alerts in Florida and Alabama. The alerts include Coastal Flood Statements, High Surf Advisories, and Rip Current Statements, highlighting the risks of minor coastal flooding, dangerous rip currents, and large breaking waves.
In Coastal Broward County and Coastal Miami Dade County, Florida, residents are advised to be cautious due to isolated minor coastal flooding and dangerous rip currents. The alerts are in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening. The impacts may include water on low-lying roads and property, with rip currents posing a threat to swimmers by pulling them into deeper waters.
Similarly, Coastal Palm Beach County, Florida, is under a High Surf Advisory with large breaking waves of 5 to 9 feet expected in the surf zone. The advisory is in effect until 4 AM EDT Sunday, coinciding with the Coastal Flood Statement and High Rip Current Risk alerts.
In Alabama, Mobile Coastal and Baldwin Coastal Counties, along with Escambia Coastal, Santa Rosa Coastal, and Okaloosa Coastal Counties in Florida, are under a High Rip Current Risk alert. Dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves of 4 to 6 feet are expected in the surf zone until Monday afternoon. The alerts also warn of localized beach erosion and the potential for swimmers to be swept away from shore.
Meanwhile, in Puerto Rico, a Flood Advisory has been issued for Barranquitas and Orocovis due to excessive rainfall causing urban and small stream flooding. The advisory is in effect until 6:30 PM AST, with additional rainfall expected to lead to minor flooding in low-lying areas.
As climate change intensifies, extreme weather events like these are becoming more frequent and severe. Rising sea levels and warmer ocean temperatures contribute to the increased risks of coastal flooding, rip currents, and high surf. It is crucial for residents in these areas to stay informed, follow safety guidelines, and be prepared for potential impacts.
The NWS alerts serve as a reminder of the importance of proactive measures to mitigate the effects of extreme weather events. By staying vigilant and heeding official warnings, communities can better protect themselves and minimize the risks associated with coastal hazards.
