As severe weather continues to impact various parts of Arizona, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple alerts for thunderstorms and flash floods. These weather events pose significant hazards to residents and travelers in the affected areas.
In Phoenix, a strong thunderstorm was reported over Litchfield Park, moving northeast at 30 mph. The storm was capable of producing wind gusts up to 40 mph and penny-sized hail, potentially causing damage to outdoor objects and tree limbs. Locations such as Phoenix, Glendale, Scottsdale, and Peoria were expected to be impacted by the storm, with warnings issued for highways including Interstate 10 and Route 51.
Similarly, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Yarnell, located southwest of Prescott, with the storm moving north at 30 mph. This storm was predicted to bring 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail, posing risks of hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees in the affected areas.
In addition to the thunderstorm alerts, a flash flood warning was issued for Maricopa County, with heavy rain causing up to 1.5 inches of rainfall and the potential for an additional inch. The warning highlighted the risk of life-threatening flash flooding in creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, and streets, urging residents to take precautions.
Further alerts were issued for areas including Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, and Tempe, with strong to severe thunderstorms expected to develop throughout the day. Torrential rainfall and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning were reported, emphasizing the need for caution and monitoring of local weather updates.
