Severe weather alerts have been issued across multiple states in the central United States, with severe thunderstorms and flooding posing significant risks to communities. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued various warnings and statements to alert residents of the potential hazards associated with these weather events.
In North Central Texas, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until midnight CDT, with the storm moving out of the area. The storm, which prompted the warning, has the potential to bring strong winds and hail, impacting areas like Collinsville, Whitesboro, Sherman, and Denison. Gusty winds could lead to tree damage and minor outdoor object damage, urging residents to stay cautious.
In Oklahoma, strong thunderstorms have been detected near Albany and Poteau, moving northeast and east, respectively. These storms are capable of producing wind gusts up to 50 mph and nickel-sized hail, posing risks to small tree limbs and unsecured objects. Locations in the path of these storms include Hugo Lake State Park, Spiro, and Greenwood, among others.
Furthermore, a Flood Warning has been issued for portions of Arkansas and Oklahoma, including counties like Crawford, Franklin, Sebastian, Adair, and Sequoyah. Excessive rainfall has led to flooding in the warned areas, with additional rainfall expected. Residents in Fort Smith, Sallisaw, and Alma should be prepared for slow-moving or standing water, affecting local drainage systems and urban areas.
In northwest Kansas, a Flood Advisory is in effect for Thomas County, where heavy rainfall from thunderstorms has caused or is expected to cause minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Colby, Brewster, and Levant are among the locations likely to experience flooding, with additional rainfall exacerbating the situation.
As severe weather events continue to unfold in these regions, it is crucial for residents to stay informed and heed the warnings issued by the NWS. Taking necessary precautions, such as securing outdoor objects and avoiding travel in flooded areas, can help mitigate risks and ensure safety during these weather events.
