Super Typhoon Ragasa, one of the most powerful storms to hit the region in recent years, has caused widespread devastation as it made landfall in the Philippines, Taiwan, and is now approaching Hong Kong. With sustained winds of 215 km/h and gusts reaching up to 295 km/h, Ragasa has left a trail of destruction in its wake, claiming lives and displacing thousands of people.
In the Philippines, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr placed the country’s disaster response agency on full alert and ordered the mobilization of all government bodies as Ragasa approached the northern region. The storm triggered storm warnings across East and Southeast Asia, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents in vulnerable areas. The state weather agency warned of potential storm surges exceeding three meters, posing a significant threat to coastal communities.
In Taiwan, two people have been killed, and another 30 are missing in floodwaters as Ragasa lashed the island with heavy rain and strong winds. Taiwanese authorities reported that 124 people are missing after a barrier lake burst its banks in a rural township, adding to the human toll of the disaster.
As Ragasa approaches Hong Kong, residents and authorities are on high alert, preparing for the impact of the super typhoon. The Hong Kong Observatory warned of hurricane-force winds reaching offshore and on high ground, with the cyclone forecast to be closest to the city on Wednesday morning. The city is bracing for strong winds, heavy rain, and severe storm surges as Ragasa continues its destructive path.
The devastation caused by Super Typhoon Ragasa serves as a stark reminder of the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in the era of climate change. As communities across East and Southeast Asia grapple with the aftermath of the storm, the focus shifts to recovery and rebuilding efforts to support those affected by the disaster.
