As severe weather continues to impact the Southwest United States, multiple flash flood warnings and flood advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in various regions. The warnings and advisories come as a result of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, posing a significant risk of flash flooding in several areas.
In Arizona, a Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Gila County until 9:00 PM MST. Doppler radar and automated rain gauges have indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain, with between 1 and 2.5 inches already fallen. The warning highlights the potential for life-threatening flash flooding of creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses in locations such as Globe, Miami, and Cutter.
Similarly, in California, Flood Advisories have been issued for Kings and Tulare counties until 9:15 PM PDT. Doppler radar has indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms, with up to 1 inch of rain already fallen. The advisories warn of minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas, with water over roadways and overflowing poor drainage areas affecting mainly rural areas of Southeastern Kings and Southwestern Tulare Counties.
The NWS has also issued a Flood Advisory for a portion of Southwest California, including south-central Riverside and far northeastern San Diego counties, until 8:52 PM PDT. Arroyo and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected, impacting locations like Thermal, Mecca, and Santa Rosa Mountain.
As the heavy rain subsides in some areas, the NWS emphasizes the importance of heeding remaining road closures and staying vigilant. A Flood Watch remains in effect for portions of southwest Arizona and California until early Friday morning, indicating the potential for additional rainfall and minor flooding.
These severe weather alerts underscore the immediate dangers posed by flash flooding and the importance of staying informed and prepared during such events. Residents in the affected areas are urged to monitor local weather updates, follow any evacuation orders or warnings, and avoid driving through flooded roads to ensure their safety.
