The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of weather advisories for coastal areas in Virginia, warning residents and visitors of potentially hazardous conditions. These advisories include a High Surf Advisory, a Coastal Flood Advisory, a Coastal Flood Warning, and a Beach Hazards Statement. The alerts are in effect until various times on Tuesday, September 16, with impacts ranging from dangerous swimming and surfing conditions to localized beach erosion and flooding of vulnerable areas.
The High Surf Advisory covers Eastern Currituck County, where large breaking waves of 8 to 10 feet in the surf zone are expected until 4 PM EDT on Tuesday. This advisory poses risks to beachgoers, surfers, and boaters, with rough surf conditions and a high risk of rip currents.
The Coastal Flood Advisory and Coastal Flood Warning extend to Surry, James City, Isle of Wight, Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, Suffolk, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake. These areas may experience up to one to two feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. The flooding could lead to property damage, road closures, and threats to homes and businesses.
Additionally, a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for Virginia Beach, warning of dangerous rip currents, large breaking waves, and strong longshore currents in the surf zone. This statement, in effect until 8 PM EDT on Tuesday, highlights the risks associated with swimming and surfing in these conditions.
In another part of the country, the NWS in Rapid City, South Dakota, has issued a Special Weather Statement for strong thunderstorms with wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph. This weather event could result in downed tree limbs and the blowing around of unsecured objects in the affected areas.
Furthermore, a Flash Flood Warning has been issued for parts of Midland/Odessa, Texas, due to heavy rain causing flash flooding. Residents in the warned area are advised to be cautious of flooding in small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses.
In Guam, a Flood Advisory has been issued due to excessive rainfall, leading to minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. The advisory is in effect until 12:15 PM ChST.
These weather advisories serve as crucial alerts for residents and visitors to coastal areas, urging them to exercise caution and stay informed about changing weather conditions. It is essential to follow the guidance of local authorities and take necessary precautions to ensure personal safety and minimize property damage.
