As the Gulf Coast gears up for the upcoming hurricane season, NOAA and the U.S. Air Force Reserve are joining forces to host a series of events during National Hurricane Preparedness Week. This collaborative effort aims to help communities in the region prepare for potential storms that may impact the area.
The highlight of the event will be the opportunity for the media and the public to meet NOAA hurricane experts, scientists, and crew members, and get an up-close look at some of the aircraft that play a crucial role in forecasting and monitoring hurricanes. This year’s event is particularly special as four aircraft will be on display, including the NOAA-owned Lockheed WP-3D Orion, which is celebrating 50 years of service, the Gulfstream IV-SP, Beechcraft King Air 350 CER, and the U.S. Air Force Reserve’s WC-130J.
The National Hurricane Awareness Tour will take place from Monday, May 4, through Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at various locations along the Gulf Coast, including Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, Mobile International Airport, and Lake Charles Chennault International Airport. The tour will feature presentations by key figures such as Michael Brennan, director of NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, Robbie Berg, warning coordination meteorologist, Cody Fritz, storm surge specialist lead, and Owen Shieh, warning coordination meteorologist, among others.
The event serves as an important opportunity for the public to learn more about hurricane preparedness, the science behind forecasting these powerful storms, and the critical role that aircraft like the Hurricane Hunters play in gathering data to keep communities safe.
