The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch Number 361 for portions of Southeast Iowa, Northwest Illinois, Northeast Missouri, and Southern Wisconsin. The watch is effective this Tuesday afternoon and evening from 4:40 PM until 11:00 PM CDT.
The primary threats associated with this severe thunderstorm watch include scattered damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, isolated large hail events up to 1.5 inches in diameter, and the possibility of a tornado or two. A line of thunderstorms over north-central Missouri is expected to track northeastward across the watch area through the evening, with damaging winds being the main concern. Large hail and isolated tornadoes are also possible.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay alert for threatening weather conditions, listen for further statements and warnings, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Severe thunderstorms can occasionally produce tornadoes, so it is crucial to be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
Aviation warnings have also been issued, highlighting the potential for severe thunderstorms with hail both at the surface and aloft, extreme turbulence, surface wind gusts up to 60 knots, and cumulonimbus clouds with maximum tops reaching 500. Mean storm motion vector is expected to be 24030.
