This innovative design takes the beloved pen to new heights, quite literally, as a 12:1 scale lamp that pays homage to the pen’s 75th anniversary.
The Bic Cristal, known for its simple yet effective design, has sold over 120 billion units since its inception in 1950. The pen’s success can be attributed to its reliable ink flow, thanks to a small air hole that prevents clogging and leaking. Marcel Bich, the founder of Bic, made subtle adjustments to the original ballpoint pen design, including a 1-millimeter ballpoint tip and a clear plastic body that showcases the pen’s inner workings.
Seletti’s art director, Stefano Seletti, was drawn to the Bic Cristal’s sleek aesthetic and saw its potential as a lighting object. The transparent tubular body of the pen allows light to pass through, making it an ideal candidate for a lamp. By partnering with Italian designer Mario Paroli and Bic, Seletti was able to bring the Bic Lamp to life, staying true to the pen’s original design while adding a touch of whimsy.
The Bic Lamp, available in classic blue, red, and black colorways, can be used as a floor lamp, pendant, or wall sconce, offering versatility in any space where writing is done. Priced at around $350, this unique piece combines functionality with a playful nod to a writing essential.
