As winter settles in, several states in the U.S. are bracing for a mix of snow and freezing rain, prompting the issuance of Winter Weather Advisories by the National Weather Service (NWS). From New York to Missouri, residents are urged to exercise caution as hazardous road conditions are expected to impact commutes.
In Orange County, New York, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 AM to 10 PM EST on Tuesday, with snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches anticipated. The NWS warns of slippery road conditions that could affect both morning and evening commutes. Similarly, in Warren County, New Jersey, and Berks, Lehigh, and Northampton Counties in Pennsylvania, mixed precipitation is expected with up to two inches of snow and a light glaze of ice. The advisory is in place from 4 AM to 1 PM EST on Tuesday.
Further south, in St. Louis, Missouri, portions of south-central and southwest Illinois, as well as southeast Missouri, are under a Winter Weather Advisory until early Tuesday morning. Additional snow accumulations of up to two inches are forecasted, leading to potentially slippery road conditions. In east-central Missouri and other parts of Illinois, a similar advisory is in place until midnight CST with up to one inch of snow expected.
The NWS has also issued a Special Weather Statement for Charleston, West Virginia, warning of a brief period of freezing rain early Tuesday morning. Temperatures in the upper 20s and lower 30s could create icy spots on bridges, overpasses, and elevated surfaces, impacting the morning commute. However, as surface temperatures rise above freezing, freezing rain is expected to transition to rain.
While the winter weather conditions are not anticipated to cause widespread significant impacts, travelers are advised to remain vigilant and exercise caution, especially on elevated surfaces and sheltered hollows where isolated slick spots may occur.
As the winter season progresses, staying informed about weather advisories and taking necessary precautions can help mitigate risks and ensure safety on the roads. By heeding the guidance of meteorological agencies like the NWS, individuals can navigate through challenging weather conditions with greater awareness and preparedness.
