As winter approaches, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued several weather advisories across different regions in the United States. From freezing rain to coastal flooding, residents in specific areas need to be vigilant and prepared for potential hazards.
In Avery, Yancey, and Mitchell Counties, as well as the mountains of Burke, Caldwell, and McDowell Counties in North Carolina, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 PM Monday to 10 AM EST Tuesday. Freezing rain is expected, with total ice accumulations of around two-tenths of an inch. This could lead to slippery conditions on roads, bridges, and sidewalks, impacting the Tuesday morning commute.
In Fluvanna and Western Louisa Counties in Virginia, a Winter Weather Advisory is also in place from 1 AM to 11 AM EST Tuesday. Mixed precipitation is expected, with light freezing rain or sleet. Total snow and sleet accumulations are forecasted to be less than a half-inch, along with ice accumulations of a light glaze, potentially causing slippery road conditions.
On the West Coast, a Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for North Bay Interior Valleys and San Francisco Bay Shoreline Counties in California. From 6 AM Tuesday to 3 PM PST Sunday, up to 1.4 feet of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This could lead to flooding of lots, parks, and roads, with only isolated road closures expected.
Additionally, a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for Bayshore locations along San Francisco and Monterey Bay in California. Long period westerly swell is expected to result in an increased risk of sneaker waves and strong rip currents through Wednesday evening. Breaking waves of 10 to 14 feet, with long lulls of 10 to 20 minutes or more between the largest sets, could pose dangers to beachgoers.
As these weather advisories remain in effect, residents are advised to stay informed through official sources like the NWS and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. By being aware of the potential risks and heeding the guidance provided, individuals can better navigate the challenging weather conditions.
