As winter settles in across the United States, several states are facing winter weather alerts due to snow and high winds, impacting travel and creating hazardous conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued various advisories and warnings to alert residents of the potential dangers.
In North Dakota, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for portions of western and south-central areas, with additional snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches expected until noon CST. The hazardous travel conditions could make roads slippery and reduce visibility, urging residents to exercise caution while commuting.
Similarly, South Dakota is also facing snowfall, with Winter Weather Advisories in place for Buffalo, Hughes, Jones, Lyman, Stanley, Corson, Dewey, Brown, Clark, and Spink Counties. Additional snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches are forecasted, accompanied by gusty winds of up to 40 mph. Slippery road conditions and reduced visibility due to blowing snow are expected until this afternoon or evening.
In Colorado, a Winter Weather Advisory for snow and blowing snow has been issued for various mountain ranges until early this morning. Additional snow accumulations of up to two inches are anticipated, with winds gusting as high as 45 mph. Travel is expected to be slick and hazardous, improving by mid to late morning as the snow tapers off.
On the West Coast, a Beach Hazards Statement has been released for beaches in Oregon, warning of a high risk of sneaker waves from Monday morning through Tuesday afternoon. These powerful waves can pose a significant threat to beachgoers, potentially knocking them off their feet and into the ocean. The public is advised to be cautious and aware of the tides when visiting the beaches during this period.
Furthermore, a High Wind Watch has been issued for the Guadalupe Mountains of west Texas and Southeast New Mexico, with northeast winds of 35 to 45 mph and gusts up to 65 mph possible. Travel difficulties, especially for high-profile vehicles, are expected from this evening through Sunday morning.
As winter weather continues to impact various states, it is crucial for residents to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being.
