As winter settles in, the Midwest is bracing for a series of winter storms that are expected to bring heavy snowfall and hazardous conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Winter Storm Warnings and Watches for various regions, with significant snow accumulations predicted from Friday night through Saturday night.
In Central Iowa, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued with total snow accumulations expected to reach between 9 and 14 inches. This heavy snowfall is likely to make travel very difficult, impacting post-Thanksgiving travel plans. Similarly, portions of south central, southeast, and southwest Iowa are under a Winter Storm Watch, with total snow accumulations between 3 and 6 inches and the possibility of ice accumulations.
Moving eastward, Adams and Juneau Counties in Wisconsin are also under a Winter Storm Watch, with heavy snow possible and total snow accumulations of 6 inches or more. Travel in these areas could be significantly impacted by the snowfall.
Northeast Iowa and portions of southeast Minnesota are under a Winter Storm Warning, with heavy snow expected and total snow accumulations over 6 inches. Travel in these regions is expected to be very difficult as well.
Further north, in Wabasha County, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued with total snow accumulations around 5 inches. Slippery road conditions are anticipated, affecting travel from Friday night to Sunday morning.
In Iron County, Minnesota, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for lake-effect snow, with additional snow accumulations of one to three inches expected until this evening. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening commute in this area.
Central Illinois is also preparing for heavy snow, with a Winter Storm Watch issued for all of central Illinois along and north of I-70. Total snow accumulations in excess of 5 inches are predicted, making roads, bridges, and overpasses slick and hazardous.
As these winter storms sweep across the Midwest, it is crucial for residents to stay informed about weather updates, heed warnings from local authorities, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of inclement weather.
