The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch and Winter Weather Advisory for central Minnesota and surrounding areas, including parts of Wisconsin and Iowa. The alerts are in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning, with the potential for significant snowfall and gusty winds.
According to the NWS forecast, rain is expected to transition to snow on Tuesday afternoon and evening, with accumulating snowfall continuing through Wednesday morning. Snow rates could exceed 0.5 inches per hour at times, leading to quick accumulations favoring central Minnesota. Additionally, gusty winds as high as 40 mph are forecasted, which could result in reduced visibility and blowing snow.
The Winter Storm Watch covers Benton and Stearns Counties, with total snow accumulations between 3 and 5 inches possible. The Winter Weather Advisory includes portions of central and east central Minnesota and northwest and west central Wisconsin, with total snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches and winds gusting 35 to 45 mph.
In a separate alert, the NWS Des Moines IA has issued a Wind Advisory for portions of north central, northwest, and west central Iowa. Northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected from Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects, potentially causing tree limbs to be blown down and a few power outages.
Furthermore, the NWS Great Falls MT has issued a Special Weather Statement for Southwest Montana, warning of heavy snowfall moving southeast through the region. Visibility is below a half mile at times, and snowfall rates could approach 1 inch per hour. Travelers are advised to drive with caution and be alert for rapidly changing road conditions.
These weather alerts highlight the importance of being prepared for winter weather conditions, especially during the holiday season when many people are traveling. It is crucial to stay informed about weather updates, follow safety guidelines, and adjust travel plans if necessary to ensure personal safety and minimize disruptions.
