As winter approaches, various weather alerts have been issued across the United States, highlighting the diverse conditions affecting different regions. From snowstorms to dense fog and high surf advisories, residents in different parts of the country are urged to exercise caution and prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.
In New Mexico, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Northern and Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Tusas Mountains, and Jemez Mountains. The advisory warns of expected snow accumulations of 3 to 8 inches, with isolated higher amounts above 11,000 feet. Travel could be very difficult in these areas, with reduced tire traction and the need for increased distance between vehicles.
Moving to the East Coast, a Dense Fog Advisory has been issued for several counties in North Carolina. Visibility is expected to be one quarter mile or less in dense fog, making driving conditions hazardous. The impacted areas include Alexander, Catawba, Davie, Iredell, Burke Mountains, Caldwell Mountains, Eastern McDowell, Greater Burke, Greater Caldwell, and McDowell Mountains Counties.
On the West Coast, High Surf Advisories have been put in place for San Luis Obispo County Beaches, Santa Barbara County Central Coast Beaches, and Ventura County Beaches in California. Large breaking waves of up to 14 feet with dangerous rip currents pose an increased risk of ocean drowning. Swimmers, surfers, and beachgoers are advised to be cautious as these conditions can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore.
In Central California, a Dense Fog Advisory has been issued for a portion of the region, including highways like Interstate 5 and various State Routes. Visibility is expected to be as low as 200 feet in dense fog, making driving hazardous. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and be prepared for reduced visibility on the roads.
These weather alerts serve as a reminder of the importance of staying informed and prepared for changing weather conditions. Whether it’s snow, fog, or high surf, being aware of potential hazards and taking necessary precautions can help ensure the safety of individuals and communities.
