As severe weather continues to impact various regions of the United States, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple alerts for thunderstorms, snow, and beach hazards. These weather events pose risks to communities and highlight the importance of staying informed and prepared.
In California, a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued by the NWS San Francisco CA, warning of a long period northwesterly swell leading to increased risks of sneaker waves and rip currents along Pacific Coast beaches. Breaking waves of 13 to 18 feet are expected from Thursday afternoon through Monday evening, potentially causing sneaker waves to run farther up the beach than normal and rip currents to be stronger near jetties, inlets, and piers.
Moving to Texas, the NWS San Angelo TX and NWS Midland/Odessa TX have issued Special Weather Statements for strong thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 44 mph, penny size hail, and wind gusts up to 50 mph, nickel size hail, respectively. These storms could result in minor hail damage to vegetation and gusty winds capable of knocking down tree limbs and unsecured objects in locations like Rotan, Hitson, Garden City, and Forsan.
In Alaska, the NWS Anchorage AK has issued Winter Weather Advisories for the Kuskokwim Delta and Inland Bristol Bay/Northern Bristol Bay Coast, forecasting snow accumulations of 3 to 8 inches and winds gusting up to 40 mph. These conditions could make travel very difficult, with reduced visibility in heavy snow or blowing snow.
Additionally, a Special Weather Statement from the NWS Norman OK highlights the potential for nickel-sized hail and minor damage to outdoor objects in areas like Benjamin, Gilliland, and Vera.
As these weather events unfold, it is crucial for residents in affected areas to heed the warnings from the NWS, take necessary precautions, and stay updated on changing conditions. By being prepared and informed, individuals can better protect themselves and their communities from the impacts of severe weather.
