The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and a Winter Storm Warning for the northern highways of Alaska, specifically the Klondike Highway and the Haines Highway. A strong low-pressure system moving along the Panhandle coast is expected to bring heavy snowfall to the region starting early Wednesday morning.
According to the NWS, snow is anticipated to begin falling early Wednesday morning, with the heaviest snowfall expected to move through the northern Panhandle into Wednesday afternoon. The upper elevations of the Haines Highway and the Klondike Highway are likely to experience heavy and wet snow, with total accumulations of up to 5 inches in some areas. Travel could be significantly impacted, especially in areas west of Haines towards Haines Customs and north of Skagway towards White Pass.
Additionally, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the Haines Highway from MP20 west towards Haines Customs, with heavy wet snow expected to accumulate 6 to 8 inches on Wednesday. Travel conditions are expected to be difficult, with the heaviest snowfall forecasted between 9 am to 3 pm.
