The Pacific Northwest is currently facing a significant weather event, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing Coastal Flood Warnings and High Surf Advisories for various coastal areas in Washington and Oregon. The warnings are in effect from November 5th to November 6th, impacting regions such as the Northern Washington Coast, Grays Harbor County, Clatsop, Tillamook Coast, and South Washington Coast.
According to the NWS alerts, moderate to major coastal flooding is expected, with inundation of 2 to 3 feet above ground level along shorelines and low-lying coastal areas. Additionally, large breaking waves of 20 to 30 feet are forecasted, posing risks of significant coastal flooding, road closures, property damage, and shoreline erosion. The high tides and storm surge are expected to lead to numerous impacts on homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure in the affected areas.
The wave activity is anticipated to peak on Thursday, potentially causing as many or more impacts than the high tide on Wednesday. Sneaker waves are also possible due to high waves and long-period energetic periods, emphasizing the need for caution when in or near the water. People are advised to be vigilant, especially with children and pets, as destructive waves may wash over beaches, jetties, and other structures unexpectedly.
In addition to the Coastal Flood Warnings and High Surf Advisories, a Flood Watch has been issued for Mason County in northwest Washington, where excessive rainfall may lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and low-lying areas. The Skokomish River is at risk of exceeding flood stage as early as Thursday afternoon due to heavier rain.
This weather event underscores the importance of preparedness and safety measures in the face of natural disasters. Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay informed, follow guidance from local authorities, and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property.
As the Pacific Northwest navigates these challenging weather conditions, it serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of our environment and the need for resilience in the face of climate-related challenges.
