As coastal areas brace for the impact of severe weather conditions, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of Coastal Flood Warnings and Advisories for several counties in Virginia and Maryland. These alerts, which are in effect until various times today and tomorrow, highlight the imminent threat of flooding in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
In Accomack and Northampton Counties, a Coastal Flood Warning is in place until midnight tonight, with around two feet of inundation above ground level expected. This poses an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses near the waterfront and shoreline, with water levels reaching 1 to 2 feet above ground in some areas, leading to road closures and potential flooding of vehicles.
Similarly, Coastal Flood Warnings have been issued for Prince George, Charles City, Surry, James City, Isle of Wight, and Newport News Counties until 10 AM this morning. The impact is expected to be widespread flooding in vulnerable areas, with water levels reaching 1 to 2 feet above ground level, resulting in road closures and threats to homes and businesses.
In Worcester County, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 7 PM today, with up to one foot of inundation expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Shallow flooding is anticipated in vulnerable locations, posing a low threat of property damage.
Additionally, a High Surf Advisory has been issued for Maryland Beaches County until 4 PM today, with large breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet in the surf zone. This advisory, coupled with the Coastal Flood Advisory, highlights the potential for dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, as well as localized beach erosion.
In Maryland, Calvert County and Anne Arundel County are also under Coastal Flood Warnings, with inundation levels ranging from one to three feet above ground level. The impact includes flooding of structures, homes, and businesses near the waterfront and shoreline, with water levels expected to reach up to 4.2 feet in some areas.
As communities in these coastal regions prepare for the impending weather conditions, it is crucial for residents to heed the warnings issued by the NWS and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and protect their properties from potential damage.
