As coastal areas brace for the impact of rising tides, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of Coastal Flood Advisories and Warnings for various regions in Maryland and Washington D.C. The alerts, which are in effect until late tonight or early tomorrow morning, warn of potential inundation above ground level due to tidal flooding.
In the City of Alexandria and Arlington County, a Coastal Flood Warning is in place until 6 PM EDT this evening, with up to one foot of inundation expected, particularly around high tide. Water levels are projected to approach buildings near King Street and Union Street, with an increasing number of streets and parks flooded in Alexandria. Access to Daingerfield Island may be cut off as a result of the flooding.
Similarly, in Southern Baltimore County and the city of Baltimore, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 10 PM EDT tonight. One to two feet of inundation above ground level is anticipated in low-lying areas, with impacts including flooding of the concrete promenade at Fells Point and water covering the boardwalk at the Maritime Park water taxi stop. Thames Street and much of the promenade in the Inner Harbor are also expected to be flooded.
Additional Coastal Flood Advisories have been issued for Fairfax and Central and Southeast Prince William/Manassas/Manassas Park Counties, Cecil County, Southeast Harford County, and the District of Columbia. These advisories warn of varying levels of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas due to tidal flooding, with impacts ranging from minor shoreline flooding to isolated road closures.
Tides are expected to be two and a half to three feet above normal in the affected areas, with high tides occurring throughout the afternoon and evening. Residents are advised to take precautions and monitor local weather updates for the latest information on the evolving situation.
The Coastal Flood Advisories and Warnings highlight the ongoing challenges posed by rising sea levels and the increased frequency of coastal flooding events. As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, communities in coastal regions must be prepared to adapt and mitigate the risks associated with these phenomena.
