As coastal communities along the East Coast brace for potential flooding, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of Coastal Flood Advisories and Warnings for various regions. The alerts, which are in effect until late tonight or early tomorrow morning, highlight the risk of inundation in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
In New Jersey, Gloucester, Camden, and Northwestern Burlington counties are under a Coastal Flood Advisory until midnight tonight. The advisory warns of up to half a foot of inundation above ground level, potentially leading to road closures in vulnerable areas. Additionally, a Coastal Flood Warning has been issued for Ocean and Coastal Ocean counties, with the possibility of one foot of inundation, significant road closures, and property damage.
Further south, Queen Annes, Talbot, and Caroline counties in Maryland are also under a Coastal Flood Advisory until 3 AM Friday, while Kent County faces a similar advisory until 5 AM Friday. These advisories caution of flooding in bayside communities and along tidal waterways, with the potential for road closures.
In Virginia, Charles and King George Counties are under a Coastal Flood Advisory until 2 AM Friday, with the risk of up to two feet of inundation in low-lying areas. The advisory emphasizes the impact of tidal flooding on yards and docks in the affected regions.
Meanwhile, Anne Arundel County in Maryland is under a Coastal Flood Warning until 8 AM Friday, with the potential for one to two feet of inundation in low-lying areas. The warning highlights the risk of flooding in various locations, including the Maritime Museum in Annapolis and businesses on Dock Street.
These alerts come as a result of elevated tidal levels, with water levels expected to remain above normal around high tide periods. Residents in the affected areas are advised to take precautions and monitor local weather updates closely.
The combination of these Coastal Flood Advisories and Warnings underscores the ongoing threat of coastal flooding in the region, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of changing weather patterns and rising sea levels.
